The fruit of the pomegranate

Pomegranate extract comes from the fruit of the pomegranate tree (Punica granatum), and more specifically from its seeds, where the oil with the most interesting cosmetic profile is concentrated. A fruit laden with symbolism in almost all Mediterranean and Eastern cultures, and also with quite remarkable chemistry.

Its star ingredient is punicic acid, also known as omega-5, a unique conjugated fatty acid found in virtually no other vegetable oil. In addition, it contains a very high concentration of polyphenols, especially punicalagins and ellagitannins, which surpass green tea in antioxidant capacity. And vitamin E, which completes the protective profile.

How it works

It works mainly as an antioxidant and regenerator. Polyphenols neutralize free radicals before they can damage skin cells, while punicic acid stimulates the proliferation of keratinocytes and fibroblasts, the cells responsible for cell renewal and collagen synthesis, respectively.

The practical result is firmer skin with better texture and more controlled oxidative aging. It also has anti-inflammatory and soothing action, which makes it interesting for reactive skin or skin prone to redness.

Use and integration into the routine

In cosmetics, it appears mainly as an extract or seed oil in serums, creams, and facial oils, and also in cleansing products and body exfoliants. Its direct pure use as a night serum is possible, 2-3 drops on clean skin.

The fruit of love in all cultures
Pomegranate appears in Greek mythology linked to Aphrodite, who according to legend planted the first pomegranate tree. In Jewish tradition, it symbolizes abundance and is related to the 613 commandments of the Torah, one per seed. In China, it is given to newlyweds as a symbol of fertility and good luck. Few fruits accumulate so much symbolism in such different cultures.

Extraordinarily low yield
Approximately 100 kg of pomegranates are needed to obtain about 100 g of seed oil. This is one of the reasons why pure pomegranate oil is so precious and has a high price.

Its antioxidants surpass green tea
Punicalagins, the main polyphenols in pomegranate, have an ORAC-measured antioxidant capacity significantly higher than that of green tea or red wine. It's not marketing: it's quantifiable chemistry.

Punicic acid is almost exclusive to pomegranate
Omega-5 or punicic acid is found in relevant concentrations practically only in pomegranate seed oil. There is no other common vegetable oil in cosmetics that contains it in significant quantity, which makes pomegranate difficult to replace when seeking that specific action profile.
