Calendula: the anti-inflammatory flower your skin has been craving

It may sound strange that a moisturizer doesn't contain water, but that's precisely its advantage. Instead of providing water that evaporates, this formula combines rose hydrosol with vegetable oils that reinforce the skin's natural film and prevent it from losing its own moisture. The result is longer-lasting hydration that doesn't require preservatives, because microorganisms don't proliferate without free water. A light texture, yes, but deep care.

Aroma: Rosa de Damasco

Familia: Floral, Chipre

Experiencia sensorial

Light, two-phase fluid that, when shaken, blends into a golden liquid. It spreads easily and absorbs quickly, leaving the skin fresh, soft, and non-greasy. Delicate and natural rose scent.

Calendula: the anti-inflammatory flower your skin has been craving

Fluid moisturizer sensitive skin 100% organic - imagen saber más

What is Calendula

Calendula officinalisis an annual herbaceous plant of the Asteraceae family, native to the Mediterranean and Southern Europe. Its intensely orange or yellow flowers are the part used in cosmetics: rich in flavonoids, triterpenoids, carotenoids, and phenolic acids, they concentrate everything that makes this ingredient so valued.

In cosmetic formulation, it is mainly used in two formats: the aqueous or hydroglyceric extract, obtained by maceration or extraction of the flowers, and the macerated oil, which results from infusing the petals in a carrier vegetable oil, usually sunflower oilor olive oil. Each format has a distinct performance profile, although they share the active core.

Do not confuse it with tagetes (Tagetes erecta), also called "marigold" in some countries, which is a different species with a different safety profile.

How it works

Calendula acts on several fronts simultaneously. Its flavonoids, especially isorhamnetin and narcissin, modulate the local inflammatory response by inhibiting mediators such as prostaglandins. Its triterpenoids, such as lupeol and oleanolic acid, enhance the healing and regenerative capacity of tissues. Carotenoids, responsible for the characteristic orange color, provide antioxidant activity, neutralizing free radicals that damage skin cells.

On the skin, the result is a real, non-cosmetic soothing action: it reduces redness, supports epidermal regeneration, and strengthens the barrier function. On the scalp, it calms irritation, reduces sensitivity, and balances the skin microbiota without causing harm.

Properties and benefits

  • Anti-inflammatory: calms redness, irritations, and skin reactions with a documented mechanism of action.
  • Healing and regenerating: accelerates the recovery of damaged skin, small wounds, and skin subjected to friction or exposure.
  • Antioxidant: neutralizes oxidative damage thanks to carotenoids and polyphenols.
  • Scalp soothing: relieves itching, sensitivity, and irritation without drying or altering pH.
  • Gentle emollient: in macerated oil format, it softens and nourishes the skin without feeling heavy.
  • Mild antimicrobial: inhibits the growth of certain microorganisms, useful for skin prone to imbalances.
  • Compatible with very sensitive, reactive, and atopic skin: one of the few botanical active ingredients with a high tolerability profile even in formulations for babies.

Usage and integration into routine

Calendula appears in a wide variety of products: soothing creams, serums for sensitive skin, gentle shampoos, soaps, massage oils, and diaper area products. Its versatility makes it a staple in natural formulation.

In hair, it works especially well in shampoos for sensitive or irritated scalps, where its soothing action combines with gentle cleansing. Coconut surfactants, common in this type of formula, are its usual companions: you can read more about them in the coconut surfactantsinformation sheet.

It combines seamlessly with aloe verain soothing and restorative formulations, and with beta-glucanwhen the goal is to soothe and strengthen the barrier simultaneously. It also pairs well with argan oilin nourishing products for damaged skin or hair.

It does not present known negative interactions with other common active ingredients in natural cosmetics. People with allergies to plants of the Asteraceae family (chamomile, arnica, echinacea) should perform a patch test on a small skin area beforehand, as there is a risk of cross-reactivity, although it is rare.

Facts and curiosities

The flower that doesn't close on cloudy days
Its name comes from the Latin calendae, the first day of the Roman month, because Calendula officinalisblooms practically throughout the year in temperate climates. Farmers observed that its flowers open with the sun and close with clouds or at dusk, which made it a natural weather indicator. This tenacity to bloom almost non-stop is, in a way, a reflection of its active profile: it never stops.

The color that also acts
The intense orange of its petals is not just aesthetic. The beta-carotenes and xanthophylls that give it that color are the same compounds that act as antioxidants on the skin. In concentrated extracts, this characteristic tone can leave a slight coloration on very light formulations, which is a sign of richness in carotenoids, not a defect.

From traditional pharmacy to contemporary cosmetics
Calendula has been in European herbal tradition since at least the 12th century. In the Middle Ages, it was used in poultices for wounds and burns. During World War I, field doctors used calendula oil in dressings for shrapnel wounds. Today, science has named the mechanisms that herbalists intuited centuries ago.

In the INCI, it appears as: Calendula officinalis flower extract · Calendula officinalis flower oil · Calendula officinalis
