Monoï: the gold of French Polynesia

A brief history of traditional Marseille soap.

Medieval origins (13th century): Soap production in Marseille began with olive oil and vegetable soda. The abundance of raw materials in the region (olive oil, salt from the Camargue) contributed to its spread.

Royal regulation (1688): Colbert's edict, under Louis XIV, established strict rules: only pure vegetable oils, prohibition of animal fats, and cooking in large cauldrons. This gave Marseille soap its reputation for quality.

19th century – industrial boom: Marseille became the soap capital of France. In 1900 there were nearly 100 factories and in 1913 production reached 180,000 tons.

Modern times: With the arrival of synthetic detergents in the 20th century, the industry drastically declined. Today, only a few traditional factories keep the original recipe alive. Today, artisanal soaps are considered luxury and traditional items.
