Bakuchiol: the benefits of retinol without the drama

Pure natural bakuchiol serum - imagen saber más

What is bakuchiol?

A plant-derived active ingredient extracted from the seeds and leaves of the Psoralea corylifoliaplant, also known as babchi. Used for over 2,000 years in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine to treat skin conditions, its active ingredient arrived in modern cosmetics with a specific promise: the anti-aging benefits of retinol without its demanding tolerance.

It is not retinol or a derivative of vitamin A. It is a different molecule that activates similar cellular pathways through a different mechanism. The practical result is comparable, but the path is not the same.

How it works

Bakuchiol is a functional analog of retinol. It stimulates collagen and elastin synthesis, promotes cell renewal, and improves skin texture by activating the same receptors as retinol, but without the side effects that make the latter so demanding during the adaptation period.

It is not photosensitizing, which means it can be used morning and night without the strict photoprotection protocol required by retinol. And its tolerance in sensitive or reactive skin, or during pregnancy, is significantly better, although it is always recommended to consult a healthcare professional if in doubt.

Properties and benefits

  • Stimulates collagen and elastin. Improves firmness, elasticity, and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles with continued use.
  • Evens tone and texture. Promotes cell renewal, improves the appearance of blemishes, and provides overall luminosity.
  • Antioxidant and soothing. Protects against oxidative damage and helps reduce redness and inflammation.
  • Support for acne-prone skin. It has antibacterial and sebum-regulating effects, helping to prevent clogged pores and breakouts.
  • High tolerance. It typically does not cause flaking or an adaptation period, making it especially useful for sensitive skin that does not tolerate conventional retinol well.

Bakuchiol and retinol

Retinol has decades of clinical evidence and proven efficacy, but in some skin types, it causes irritation, dryness, and photosensitivity, especially at first. It requires nighttime use and strict sun protection.

Bakuchiol does not have this irritation profile and can be used in both morning and evening routines. In comparative clinical studies, it has shown similar improvements in wrinkles and pigmentation with a lower incidence of adverse effects. It is not superior in efficacy, but it is more accessible for skin types that do not tolerate retinol.

Use and integration into your routine

It is primarily found in serums, creams, and facial oils. Apply morning and night to clean skin, before moisturizer or oil. It pairs well with niacinamide, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid.

If combined with potent exfoliants like glycolic acid, it is best to alternate them to avoid overworking reactive skin.

Interesting facts and data

It is not "plant-based retinol" in a chemical sense.
It is called that due to its comparable functional effect, but the molecule is completely different. This is important because it means its mechanism of action is different, its tolerance is different, and its contraindications are also different. Using the name as a synonym is oversimplifying.

Complex extraction
The natural concentration of bakuchiol in the plant is low, which makes the extraction and purification processes demanding. This partly explains why products containing it in relevant concentrations are more expensive than other active serums.

Babchi has been used in Indian medicine for millennia.
The Psoralea corylifoliaplant is mainly cultivated in India and Sri Lanka and has been used in Ayurveda for over 2,000 years to treat skin, improve vitality, and, according to classical texts, promote longevity. Modern cosmetics took a long time to catch up.
