The curiously shaped fruit

The sausage tree. The name is not an affectionate nickname: its fruits are elongated, weigh up to 10 kg, and hang from the tree like giant sausages. Kigelia africana is a tree native to tropical and sub-Saharan Africa with a long history in the traditional medicine of peoples such as the Zulu, Maasai, and numerous West African communities, who used it to treat wounds, psoriasis, eczema, and skin conditions, and women specifically applied it to keep the skin firm and toned.

The cosmetic extract is obtained from ripe fallen fruits. True upcycling: the tree is not harmed, and the fruit is harvested after it has completed its natural cycle.

How it works

Its composition is what makes it interesting: flavonoids, iridoids, naphthoquinones, and saponins. Each with a different role, but together they explain why it has this simultaneous action on firmness, inflammation, and tone.

Flavonoids and natural peptides stimulate collagen and elastin synthesis, improve cell cohesion, and reduce the degradation of the extracellular matrix — the protein network that gives structure and firmness to the skin. The result is visible: an immediate tightening effect and progressive improvement with continued use.

Kigelia fruits can reach 60-90 cm in length and weigh between 5 and 10 kg. When they fall from branches, which can be over 20 meters high, with the impact force that implies, it's best not to be underneath to avoid being crushed by the sausage. African animals such as elephants, hippos, and giraffes are the main consumers of these fruits. The tree has co-evolved with megafauna.
