Fitoretinol: the retinol for everyone

What is phytoretinol?

It is not a single ingredient but a concept: the set of plant-based active ingredients that replicate the mechanism of action of retinol, stimulating collagen synthesis and promoting cell renewal, with better tolerance and without the side effects that make conventional retinol so demanding.

Retinol works, no one disputes that. But it irritates, causes peeling, sensitizes the skin to the sun, and requires an adaptation period that not everyone tolerates. For those who cannot or do not want to go through that, phytoretinol is the answer that natural cosmetics have been building for years.

Active ingredients under the concept

Bakuchiol

The most well-known and studied. Extracted from the seeds of the babchi plant (Psoralea corylifolia), it stimulates the same receptors as retinol but through a different mechanism, without photosensitivity or an irritation period. It is the gold standard for plant-based alternatives to retinol, with comparative clinical studies supporting its efficacy on firmness, elasticity, and wrinkles. It has its own entry: bakuchiol.

Sea Fennel (Crithmum maritimum)

Known as the "retinol of the sea." A coastal plant rich in bioactive compounds that stimulate epidermal renewal. It stands out for its tightening and firming effect, with a progressive lift that is noticeable with continued use. More difficult to find than bakuchiol, but with an interesting action profile, especially for mature skin.

Picão Preto Extract (Bidens pilosa)

A less known active ingredient but with documented results on elasticity and deep firmness. It contributes to a more compact skin with better structure, working in deeper layers than other phytoretinols.

Properties and benefits

  • Progressive cell renewal. Promotes skin with a more refined texture, a more even and revitalized appearance with continued use.
  • Firmness and lifting effect. Stimulates collagen and improves elasticity, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and signs of fatigue.
  • Radiance and even tone. Can improve the appearance of small dark spots and bring life back to dull skin.
  • High tolerance. Without the "retinization" process of classic retinol: no intense peeling, no adaptation period, suitable from day one even for sensitive skin.

Phytoretinol vs. retinol

Retinol has decades of clinical evidence and proven efficacy that is hard to match. But it is photosensitive, requires strict nighttime use, daily sun protection, and an adaptation period where the skin may worsen before it improves.

Phytoretinol is not photosensitive: it can be integrated into day and night routines without the strict protocol of retinol. It respects the skin barrier, does not compromise the skin's protective function, and is significantly more flexible in stages where retinol is not recommended, such as pregnancy or lactation, although always under professional consultation.

It is not superior to retinol in raw efficacy. It is a real alternative for those who cannot or do not want its conditions of use.

Usage and integration into the routine

Morning and night, on clean skin, before moisturizer or oil. Compatible with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and squalane. If combined with exfoliants, it is better to alternate them to avoid overloading reactive skin.

Curiosities and facts

The sea as a source of cosmetic active ingredients
Sea fennel grows on cliffs and coastal areas exposed to salt, wind, and intense radiation. To survive in this environment, it develops highly concentrated bioactive compounds. The same logic as the algae that produces astaxanthin: extreme stress generates interesting chemistry.

Natural cosmetics closing the gap with retinol
For years, retinol was the unrivaled anti-aging active ingredient in terms of efficacy. The development of bakuchiol and other phytoretinols is one of the most significant advances in natural cosmetics in the last decade: for the first time, there are alternatives with rigorous clinical studies behind them, not just green marketing.

This is how it appears in the INCI:
