Damask Rose: Treasure of Bulgaria's Valley of Roses

A hydrolat, or floral water, is the water that results from steam distilling the petals of a plant. It collects some of the water-soluble and aromatic components of the flower, in a mild and very tolerable concentration. Damask rose hydrolat is one of the most valued in cosmetics: it soothes, refreshes, and balances without the need for anything else. Here you have it pure, undiluted and unpreserved, exactly as it comes out of distillation.

Aroma: Rosa de Damasco

Familia: Floral, Chipre

Experiencia sensorial

A light, watery texture that sprays on as a fine mist. Instantly refreshing, it absorbs without leaving residue and gives off a delicate, natural, very subtle rose scent.

Damask Rose: Treasure of Bulgaria's Valley of Roses

What is Damask Rose

The Damask Roseis one of the most valuable and studied flowers in perfumery and cosmetics. Originally from the Middle East, its cultivation spread along the Silk Road, and today its most renowned production is concentrated in the Rose Valley of Bulgaria, in the Balkan mountain range, where soil and climate conditions create an essential oil of exceptional quality that is not replicated anywhere else in the world.

In cosmetics, it is mainly used in two forms: the essential oil, obtained by steam distillation of fresh petals, and the hydrosol or rose water, the floral water resulting from the same process. Two products of the same origin, with different profiles and uses.

How it works

Its main active components, geraniol, citronellol, and nerol, are responsible for its cosmetic profile. They have anti-inflammatory and soothing action on irritated skin, mild antibacterial properties, and the ability to regulate sebum production without drying. Its B and E vitamins provide nourishment and antioxidant protection. And its essential fatty acids strengthen the skin barrier, improving hydration retention.

Rose hydrosol, milder than the oil, is especially versatile: it balances skin pH after cleansing, sets makeup, refreshes and hydrates when sprayed directly, and serves as a base for serums and creams.

Properties and benefits

  • Hydration and improved elasticity thanks to its fatty acids and vitamins.
  • Soothing and anti-inflammatory action, especially effective on skin with redness, couperose, or rosacea.
  • Antioxidant and anti-aging, protects against free radicals and contributes to collagen synthesis.
  • Regulates sebum production and minimizes pores, also suitable for combination or oily skin.
  • Regenerating and healing, stimulates cell renewal and improves the appearance of scars and imperfections.
  • Mild antiseptic, protects the skin without altering its natural microbiota.
  • Suitable for all skin types, including the most sensitive, babies, and pregnant women.

Usage and integration into routine

Rose hydrosol works well as a toner after cleansing, before serum or cream. It balances pH and prepares the skin to better absorb subsequent active ingredients. Sprayed directly on the face, it rehydrates and refreshes at any time of day.

Essential oil, due to its concentration, should always be diluted in a carrier oil such as jojoba, argan, or squalane. Never apply it neat directly to the skin. In aromatherapy, it can be diffused or added to a bath.

It pairs well with hyaluronic acidto boost hydration and with niacinamideto improve skin tone and barrier function.

Curiosities and facts

The Rose Valley and the impossible harvest
The Damask Rose blooms only between May and June, for a few weeks. The petals must be picked by hand, before dawn, to prevent the sun's heat from volatilizing the essential oils. To obtain one kilogram of pure essential oil, between 3 and 5 tons of petals are needed, picked manually during those few weeks. It is one of the most expensive essential oils in the world, and with good reason.

Perfumery and cosmetics share the same source
The Damask Rose has been the backbone of Western perfumery since the 17th century. Chanel N°5, Joy by Patou, many of the great classics feature it as a heart note. That the same ingredient that defines olfactory luxury is also an effective and well-tolerated cosmetic active is no coincidence: its complex chemistry makes it interesting in both fields.

Documented emotional benefits
The aroma of rose has documented effects on the nervous system studied in various clinical contexts: it reduces the stress response, has a mild anxiolytic effect, and improves mood. Aromatherapy with Damask rose is used in supportive protocols in oncology and in anxiety management. It's not mysticism: it's olfactory neuroscience.

Historically associated with women's health
In traditional Middle Eastern medicine and Ayurveda, Damask rose was used to alleviate menstrual discomfort and balance the female hormonal system. Modern research has found mechanisms that could explain some of these effects, although solid clinical evidence is still limited.
