Bakuchiol: natural alternative to retinol

Ingredients and Interesting facts

Bakuchiol - Regenerator & Antioxidant - imagen saber más

Bakuchiol, the ingredient known as the plant-based alternative to retinol, is extracted from the seeds and leaves of the badchi plant.

What is it?

HebakuchiolIt is a plant-based active ingredient considered the natural alternative to retinol. It offers very similar anti-aging benefits—improved firmness, wrinkles, and tone—but withgreater toleranceespecially on sensitive skin.

It is extracted from the seeds and leaves of the plantPsoralea corylifolia(babchi), used for centuries in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine to treat skin disorders and improve skin quality.

How it works

The bakuchiol is afunctional analogue of retinolThis means that it activates cellular pathways related to collagen synthesis and skin renewal, but it does so through a different mechanism, reducing the risk of irritation.

It's not vitamin A, but it stimulates similar processes in the skin, helping to improve firmness and texture without the typical side effects of retinol.

Properties and benefits

  • Stimulates collagen and elastin:It improves firmness and elasticity and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Unifies tone and texture:It promotes cell renewal, helping to improve the appearance of blemishes and providing luminosity.
  • Antioxidant and soothing action:It protects against oxidative damage and helps reduce redness and inflammation.
  • Support for acne-prone skin:It has an antibacterial and sebum-regulating effect, helping to prevent clogged pores and breakouts.
  • High tolerance:It does not usually cause intense peeling or an adaptation period, making it suitable for sensitive skin.

Bakuchiol vs. retinol

  • HeretinolIt is a vitamin A derivative with proven efficacy, but it can cause irritation, dryness, andphotosensitivityTherefore, nighttime use and strict sun protection are recommended.
  • HebakuchiolIt is not photosensitizing and can be used morning and night, always accompanied by sunscreen during the day. Furthermore, it is generally considered a safer alternative during pregnancy and breastfeeding (although consulting a healthcare professional is always recommended).

Use and integration into the routine

  • It is commonly found in serums, creams, and facial oils. It can be applied morning and night and combines well withniacinamide, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid.
  • If used in conjunction with strong exfoliants (such as glycolic acid), it is advisable to alternate them to avoid sensitization in reactive skin.

Interesting facts

  • The plantPsoralea corylifoliaIt is grown mainly in India and Sri Lanka and its seeds have been used for over 2000 years in Ayurvedic medicine to treat skin, vitality and longevity.
  • Bakuchiol is not a "plant retinol" from a chemical point of view: it is a different molecule, although its biological effect is comparable.
  • Obtaining it requires complex extraction and purification processes, since the natural concentration of the active ingredient in the plant is low.
  • In comparative clinical studies against retinol, it showed similar improvements in wrinkles and pigmentation with a lower incidence of irritation.
