Cleopatra and the milk of 700 donkeys

Curiosities about Marseille soap.

A classic from French grandmothers: they would place a small piece under the pillow or next to the bed to sleep like a baby, perfume the sheets, and ward off moths all night long. Many still do it.

The oldest and most effective drawer freshener in the world: a soap wrapped in cloth inside the drawer and clothes smell clean for months. My friend Cris does it.

Natural repellent: moths hate it thanks to olive oil and lye; that's why it was kept in wool chests and bridal trousseaus.

First baby bath: in France, it was (and still is) used to wash newborns because it is so gentle that it doesn't sting the eyes.

Floats in water: Marseille sailors carried it on voyages because if it fell into the sea, they wouldn't lose it.

Marseille beauty trick: wash your face with it, leave on for 30 seconds, and rinse → flawless skin without the need for more products (Catherine Deneuve has admitted this).

The secret scent of French luxury hotel sheets: many top laundries still use it for the final finish.

Legend or real secret?

  • History says that Cleopatra bathed daily in donkey milk to keep her skin soft, young, and radiant.
  • It is known that he needed up to [number missing] daily700 donkeysto fill the bathtub with the precious milk, because each one gives very little milk (0.5 to 1.5 liters/day). This lady was a real milk-drunkard.
  • Note: serious historical sources (such as Pliny the Elder) attribute mass bathing toPoppaea(Nero's wife, some 80 years later), and they doubt that Cleopatra actually did it. But the legend caught on so much that everyone associates it with her. It's a myth with a real basis in the benefits of donkey milk.
  • Hippocrates, the father of medicine, already recommended donkey milk centuries ago to treat various ailments such as rheumatism, intestinal problems and to help with healing, recognizing its similarity to breast milk and its beneficial properties.

Donkey milk is a treasure in natural cosmetics due to its composition similar to human milk, rich in vitamins (A, C, E, B), minerals, natural retinol, proteins and fatty acids that hydrate, regenerate and soothe the skin, relieving eczema and dermatitis, fighting acne and delaying aging, making it ideal for sensitive and mature skin thanks to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
