Legend or true secret?

The story goes that Cleopatra bathed in donkey milk to keep her skin soft, young, and radiant. And that she needed up to 700 donkeys a day to fill her bathtub, because each donkey produces between 0.5 and 1.5 liters per day. Caravans of donkeys crossed Africa, a considerable logistical effort for the personal care of the milk-loving queen.

The problem is that serious historical sources, including Pliny the Elder, attribute these massive baths to Poppaea, Nero's wife, about 80 years after Cleopatra. Hippocrates, somewhat earlier, already recommended donkey milk to treat wounds, intestinal problems, and rheumatism, recognizing its similarity to breast milk. The legend stuck to Cleopatra, but the real story is older and more widespread. A myth with a real basis, which is the most enduring combination.

Donkey milk has a surprisingly similar composition to human milk, making it one of the most skin-friendly active ingredients, especially for sensitive or reactive skin.

If the data is true, Cleopatra needed a herd of 700 animals just for her daily bath routine. A logistical feat that would be unthinkable today, but which was not so far-fetched in the context of the Ptolemaic court of the 1st century BC. The problem is that it probably wasn't her. Poppaea truly did it, according to Pliny. Cleopatra got the fame, as often happens.

Hippocrates prescribed it
The father of Western medicine already recognized the properties of donkey milk 2,500 years ago, especially its similarity to breast milk and its exceptional tolerance. That an ingredient goes from ancient Greek medical treatises to modern cosmetics without changing its argument says something about its consistency.
