What is astaxanthin?

A pigment from the carotenoid group primarily produced by the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis. It is responsible for the reddish or pinkish color of organisms such as salmon, prawns, and flamingos. And, according to available studies, it is one of the most powerful antioxidants found in nature.

It's not a trendy ingredient: it has been studied for decades in nutrition, medicine, and cosmetics. What has changed is that formulation has improved to make its stable use in cosmetic products viable.

How it's produced

H. pluvialis has a two-phase life cycle that explains why it produces astaxanthin and in what quantity.

Under favorable conditions, the cells are green, mobile, and active. When the environment becomes hostile, whether due to excess light, lack of nutrients, or salinity changes, the alga enters survival mode: it encysts, loses its flagella, develops a thick cell wall, and synthesizes large amounts of astaxanthin as a shield against oxidation and UV radiation. In this state, it can survive for years without water or nutrients, waiting for conditions to improve.

It is precisely this extreme self-protection capacity that makes astaxanthin such an interesting active ingredient for the skin.

Why it's the most powerful antioxidant

Its molecular structure is what sets it apart. Unlike other antioxidants that act only on the cell surface or only internally, astaxanthin has an elongated shape that allows it to cross the cell membrane from side to side, offering simultaneous protection on both fronts.

Furthermore, it is known as a stable pure antioxidant: it never converts into a pro-oxidant, something that can happen with other carotenoids under certain conditions. The comparative data appearing in scientific literature are striking:

  • 6,000 times more potent than vitamin C
  • 800 times more potent than coenzyme Q10
  • 550 times more potent than green tea catechins
  • 100 times more potent than vitamin E

With nuances, because antioxidant potency depends on the measurement method, but the order of magnitude is real and consistent across studies.

The natural version extracted from H. pluvialis is significantly more active than the synthetic one. They are not the same compound, even if they share a name.

Properties and benefits

  • Broad-spectrum antioxidant. Neutralizes free radicals with much greater efficacy than other known active ingredients, protecting the skin from accumulated environmental damage, sun, pollution, and daily oxidative stress.
  • Anti-aging and repairing. Improves elasticity and firmness with continuous use, reduces the depth of fine lines, and contributes to a more uniform texture.
  • Protects against UV radiation and blue light. It does not replace sunscreen but acts as a complement, strengthening cellular defenses against radiation.
  • Anti-inflammatory. Reduces skin inflammatory response, useful for reactive skin or skin exposed to aggressive factors.

Use and integration into routine

In cosmetics, it is primarily formulated in facial oils and serums, where it acts as a daily antioxidant shield. Its orange color can slightly tint highly concentrated formulations, although at typical cosmetic concentrations, it is usually not visible on the skin.

It is good for the morning, before environmental exposure, although it is also effective at night in repair routines. Compatible with hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, bakuchiol, and squalane.

Curiosities and facts

Why flamingos are pink
Flamingos are born gray. They turn pink because they eat crustaceans that have, in turn, fed on astaxanthin-rich algae. The pigment travels through the food chain and accumulates in their plumage. Farmed salmon without astaxanthin in its feed is gray, not pink. What you see on your plate is also chemistry.

Beyond cosmetics
Astaxanthin is being researched in eye health (eye strain and macular protection), sports performance (muscle recovery and reduction of post-exercise oxidative stress), and neurology (possible neuroprotective effects in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's). It is one of those ingredients that starts in cosmetics and ends up in the medical laboratory.

The alga that endures everything
H. pluvialis in its encysted state can survive for decades in extreme conditions, without water, light, or nutrients. When conditions improve, it germinates and returns to its active green phase. A survival mechanism that has been working for millions of years and, incidentally, produces the most powerful known antioxidant.
