What is N-Acetyl Glucosamine

An amino sugar naturally produced by the body and part of the skin's fundamental structure. It is neither an exotic nor a complex synthetic ingredient: it is a molecule that the skin already knows because it produces it itself, used in cosmetics to reinforce precisely the functions that lose efficiency over time.

Its most relevant role is to be the precursor of hyaluronic acid: the skin needs NAG to synthesize HA endogenously. Applying it topically does not directly provide HA, but rather strengthens the skin's ability to produce it on its own.

Where it comes from

Traditionally, it was obtained from chitin, the polymer that forms the shells of crustaceans like shrimp or crabs. Today, there are versions produced by bacterial fermentation from plant sources such as corn, suitable for vegans and people with shellfish allergies. This is the version used in responsible natural cosmetics.

How it works

It acts on several fronts simultaneously. As a precursor to hyaluronic acid, it reinforces hydration from within, improving the skin's ability to retain water without relying solely on externally applied HA. As a melanin regulator, it inhibits the tyrosinase enzyme, responsible for pigment production, making it especially effective in treating spots and hyperpigmentation, especially in combination with niacinamide.

It also has a gentle exfoliating action, very different from AHAs or BHAs: it promotes the natural shedding of dead cells without altering the skin's pH or causing photosensitivity. This is why it is a preferred option for sensitive or reactive skin that needs renewal without the cost of irritation.

Properties and benefits

• Enhanced hydration. By stimulating the endogenous synthesis of hyaluronic acid, it improves the skin's water retention capacity from within, with a more lasting effect than HA applied to the surface.
• Anti-spot. Progressively reduces hyperpigmentation, especially effective on sun and age spots. Its action is significantly enhanced in combination with niacinamide.
• Gentle renewal. Promotes natural exfoliation without irritation, without photosensitivity, and without the adaptation period required by other more aggressive exfoliants.
• Strengthening the skin barrier. Contributes to the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans, essential components of the extracellular matrix that maintain skin structure and resilience.
• Anti-aging. Stimulates collagen production and improves elasticity with continued use.

Use and integration into routine

Morning and night, with no usage restrictions. It is not photosensitizing. It works well in serums for spots, imperfections, or as a maintenance active in anti-aging routines.

Its most studied and effective combination is with niacinamide: together they work on tone, spots, and the skin barrier through complementary mechanisms. Also compatible with hyaluronic acid, beta-glucan, and succinic acid.
